Election Year 2024

The new year also brings potentially new faces to the public servant arena. Registered voters will be making selections from the President of the United States to members of Village Boards.

As American citizens, it is our patriotic duty to vote. While it may feel like your one vote doesn’t matter, it surely does. Cass County Election Commission reports a total 18,939 registered voters in Cass County as of August 2023. Republicans have  over 10 thousand of the total, about four thousand mixed into Democrats, Libertarians, and Legal Marijuana Now.

The final four thousand is ultimately undecided: non partisan. Unfortunately, indecision precludes nonpartisan citizens from voting in the primary elections. Register to  vote in Nebraska, visit:

New Village Clerk

The Village of Manley welcomes Jennifer Smith to the position of Clerk for the Village of Manley.  Jennifer will be setting hours of availability soon.

This transition marks the passing of a legacy. Jessica Tummons served faithfully as the clerk for many years. Her dedication to detail and ability to understand Nebraska law made her an asset to our village. When citizens had questions or wanted to chat, Jess would lend an ear.

Jessica, your friendly smile and warmth will be missed. Thank you, Jennifer, for stepping up to serve your community.

ATV/UTV Ordinance Repealed

Madison Garey

Manleyians will no longer be required to register their golf carts, gators, or any all terrain or utility vehicles of the like. The Village of Manley rescinded Ordinance 21-02 at the December 14, 2023 meeting of the Village Board of Trustees. The ordinance allowed the Village of Manley to Adopt and impose ATV/UTV/Golf Cart regulations within the corporate limits of the village of Manley.

Citizens no longer have the annual registration or have to pay the  associated fee. Do beware. This ordinance proved to be a safety measure for Manleyians driving said vehicles. Nebraska Revised Statute 60-103 states any motorized off-highway devices are “not to be registered for road use.”

Practically this means if caught operating an ATV or UTV on the public roads in Manley, you could be issued a citation from any peace officer. This includes not only the sheriff or deputy but even conservation officers from the game and parks commission (Nebraska  LB 80, 1997).

At the Courthouse: Village of Manley Trial Date

Madison Garey

In the case of Schmidt v. The  Village of Manley, a trial date has been set. Members of the Village Board of Trustees are to gather their evidence and prepare statements for a March 13, 2024 court date.

Though scheduled for the first quarter of 2024, there is a chance the trial could be pushed back until summer. If there is an overwhelming number of criminal cases that must be heard, the village will not appear in court until July 18, 2024.

Review of Endurance

Andrew Garey

Endurance, by Alfred Lansing, is a fantastic book about leadership and keeping together in the face of extreme hardship. If anyone picks this book up, it should be read during the winter months to better relate to the full adversity these people felt. The 1959 non-fiction book takes its name after the ship used on an expedition to attempt to cross the Antarctic.  Led by Sir Ernest Shackleton in 1914, the Endurance was trapped in ice and sunk. The captain and 28 men were stranded on icebergs.

Shackleton was able to lead his men to establish a base camp while he and others sailed to a nearby island. From there, he arranged a rescue party to save the rest of the men. The leadership, organization, and bravery of Shackleton kept these men together and alive.

Every aspect of their lives was the most arduous  anyone could have experienced.  A simple mistake made could mean death.  The food was substandard and dwindling. The work hard and unrelenting.  There was no guarantee of rescue.   The cold could kill them in a thousand ways. As each person reads this, they should look out the window and meditate on their surroundings. Allow gratitude to overwhelm you.
