Board Meeting

Manley News was discussed at the November 12 meeting of the Village Board of Trustees. The previous editions have given Manleyians an idea of what Manley News will be. Board members showed support of this publication, but we do not know if Manley News will continue to be printed by the village.

Schmidts’ vs. Village of Manley

Representatives from the Village of Manley appeared inside the Cass County CourtHouse Monday, October 23, 2023. The follow-up hearing discussed the denial of a special use permit to allow the Schmidt family to sleep at their property for the duration of ownership. A new owner would need to reapply for special permits if they wanted to sleep at the building or tear it down altogether to create something new.

Attorney David D. Chebatoris made a motion to dismiss the case, due to the petition filed by the Schmidts not being notarized and incorrect procedure in pursuing legal action against the village.  Judge Michael A. Smith agreed with Chebatoris and the case was dismissed.

The Schmidts have one more opportunity to correct their clerical errors within ten days and refile their case.

Up For Election

Local Manleyian, Justin Backhaus, was elected councilman for the Cass County 4-H Council. Congratulations, Mr. Backhaus! Thank you for your faithful service.

Feed the Farmer

Local farmers and their families enjoyed a free lunch October 25 at the Frontier Cooperative in Manley, Nebraska. “Feed the Farmer” is an annual event held at various locations around river county, the areas surrounded the Platte. In 2023, two lunches were held in Iowa and four more in Nebraska.

This event is sponsored by the radio station B103, from Nebraska City, and First Nebraska Bank. They were not the only supports to show up during this busy harvest season. The Weeping Water branch of FFA (future farmers of America), prepared all the food and goodie bags to be presented to farmers.

According to the welcoming Nehawka Frontier employees, Terri, Sam, and Dan (assigned to Manley for the 2023 harvest season), the star of the show: homemade cinnamon rolls brought in by a farmer’s wife. The rolls were gone before the lunch was half over!

These displays of gratitude from local communities for the hard work and dedication of Nebraska farmers speaks to the heart of rural America.

Local Hero

Captain (Ret.) Richard L. Fox

Madison Garey

I stumbled upon Mr. Fox while delivering the October edition of Manley News. The USAF sign catching my eye, I asked if he was the veteran. He was and eventually agreed to be interviewed for the Local Hero spotlight. I couldn’t see why a man who had served faithfully for decades was tentative to talk about his service.

Captain (Ret.) Richard L. Fox served 20 years in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1978. After retiring a second time in the civilian sector, he now resides in Manley.

Mr. Fox rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-5) in only 4.5 years. Richard was constantly hustling to get ahead. When he was working days, he attended night school. Working nights? He was going to school in the day.

Because of his work ethic, SSG Fox was an excellent candidate for Airmen’s Education and Commissioning Program (AECP).  After completing his degree in electrical engineering in under 3 years, Cadet Fox commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant branching in avionics.

CPT Fox retired after having served ten years as an enlisted airman, then an additional ten years as a commissioned officer.

While sharing his military resume, and even a story of him catching a tornado forming on video recorder in 1983 Being shown on Good Morning America as the self-proclaimed “first storm chaser”, Mr. Fox was even keeled and factual.

It was obvious while interviewing Mr. Fox that though he has done remarkable things in his own life, it is the success of his children and grandchildren that moves him. The work ethic he was able to instill in his children is something that can be generationally passed on. Awards and ribbons carry only one man’s name.
