I have found that often, half of the work you need to do, is really in showing up. If you can make it to the gym: you will workout. If you make it to the meeting: you will learn something. If you put yourself fearlessly out there: you will reap the rewards. What you believe is made obvious by how you live.

This year, all Nebraskans need to put themselves out there. First and foremost, register to vote. Then show up. You’ll do what you have to. Your vote will not only determine who our future leaders will be, but even support or oppose the murder of our most vulnerable citizens, pre-born babies.

You  can make a difference. Register to vote this year. Send an email to a representative. Read Manley News and learn, if only a little,  more about what is happening in our local governments.

Village of Manley Refuses Settle

Madison Garey

The village board, along with legal counsel, met with the unrepresented Schmidt family on February 9th, 2024 to discuss the terms of a settlement regarding the denial of a special use permit requested by the Schmidt family in 2022.

After speaking with the Schmidts for 40 minutes, the family was asked to exit the community center for board members to discuss the terms. “After nearly an hour of waiting outside, in the early February weather, the Schmidts were brought back in” said a citizen who observed the actions.

The settlement was considered and voted on  at the following board meeting February 15, 2024. Schmidts’ terms of the settlement were simple: grant the special use permit and the lawsuit would be dropped. Denise Swenson, Patty Gruber, and Phil Tapp voted against accepting the settlement. Tim Glas, after passing to consider his vote and hearing the other board members’ election, abstained. Taylor Johnson voted to accept the terms of the settlement.

After the February 9 settlement meeting and the denial of the settlement at the regular board meeting, an emergency board meeting was held late in the evening February 25. The meeting was not well announced, advertised, or disclosed to the public. The meeting was not attended by Manley Citizens outside of board members. The meeting minutes showed the Schmidt’s offered to pay $1,000 to receive the long desired Special Use Permit. If the permit was granted, the lawsuit would be dropped. All board members voted to not accept the terms of settlement.

At the same emergency meeting, board member Taylor Johnson also showed the village having spent over $11,000 in legal fees, 90% of the amount for the defense in the Schmidt v. Village of Manley case. (Expenditures can be found  in the monthly meeting minutes under claims found here.)

Another emergency meeting was held the evening February 29, 2024. The court date is still set for March 13, 2024 at 9AM in room 1 at the Cass County Courthouse in Plattsmouth. Presumable, the terms of settlement were again not accepted by the board.

Pro-Life Legislation Day

On February 27th Nebraska citizens met in the governor’s mansion for a discussion of bills under review in the Nebraska legislature concerning life.  The event was hosted by Nebraska Right to Life. An organization dedicated to saving every beating heart.

After a lovely breakfast, attendees were informed of bills under review during this unicameral legislative session and petitions that are currently being circulated in Nebraska.

Listen to all speakers from the breakfast on the Nebraska Right to Life Facebook page here.

Legislative bills like  LB 606: Nebraska Pregnancy Help Act and LB 876: Adopt the Newborn Safe Haven Act are pro-life legislation saving babies’ lives and mothers’ heartache. LB 606 incentivizes donation to pregnancy help organizations through the creation of a tax credit. LB 876 authorizes Safe Haven baby boxes at approved locations and offers funding for public awareness. These bills will save lives in Nebraska.

Learn more about LB 876 from Sandy Danek, President and Executive Director of Nebraska Right to Life.

Even with these great bills, you must keep your wits about you. A petition currently being circulated by pro-abortion groups, will allow for “ a fundamental right to abortion until fetal viability.” The “viability” is based on the judgment of the doctor being paid to perform said abortion. While the language suggests the state interference of peoples rights, the rights of the pre-born baby are not considered at all. This initiative will allow full term babies to be aborted, take away the parental rights for parents of minors seeking abortion. Parents of these wayward teens will have no say if their grandchild is aborted by their minor child, but will be stuck footing the bill. DECLINE TO SIGN.

Election Year 2024
