Let’s Grow Together!

April 2024, Vol. 2, Ed. 4

Nebraska has stayed true to the idea of experiencing all four seasons in one day. Early March temperatures were 30° above normal and mid March led to temperatures below normal with snow. We got it backwards this year. March came in like a lamb and left like a lion. If there is anything that can be said about Nebraskians, it’s we are made to be resilient. We adapt to change like wearing a hoodie with shorts in 30° weather.

Change is definitely in the air. The longer days and greener grass are a visible sign of the rebirth spring heralds. Many a Manleyian can be found with their hands in the soil , reviving their gardens and flower beds. Chirps and cheeps can be heard in the new flocks of chickens gracing the village. Spring brings such hope of the newness of life. What once appeared as death has been resurrected into new forms of glory. Thank the Lord!

Manley Fire Department Pancake Breakfast

Manley’s volunteer firefighters hosted a breakfast of pancakes, sausage and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage and coffee on Sunday March 17, 2024. Only half an hour past the opening time, nearly all seats in the hall were taken by those enjoying what should be considered the best pancakes in the county. Not only were the pancakes light, fluffy and delicious, but the kids got Mickey Mouse shaped pancakes! Louisville Volunteer fire department will be having another pancake feed in April, if you missed the perfection of firehouse pancakes in Manley.

Spring Pasta Salad, Taylor Johnson

16 oz bow tie noodles

2 cups on baby spinach

1 tablespoon of basil pesto sauce

Juice from a full lemon

1/3 cup of olive oil

1/4 cup of capers, with juice

1 1/2 cups of cherry tomatoes cut halved

Parmesan cheese and salt and pepper to taste.

Mix, cool, and enjoy!

I’ve adjusted this recipe over the years. But! The above is pretty close. Note- we love capers and love lemon juice. Start with half of these if you don’t and add more in at the end. For a more “summery” salad, sub mayo for the olive oil.

Around the Village

Young Entrepreneur Wins Landscaping Bid

Kenneth Backhaus, 14 year old Manleyian, appeared before the village board at the March 14th board meeting. Kenny gave a brief description of the duties he would carry out, cutting, weeding, clearing and even holding his own umbrella insurance in the case of an accident. After fielding questions of his work, school, activities, and life balance, his bid was unanimously accepted. For $160 a cut, all public areas of Manley will be maintained by our own local up and coming businessman.

Volunteers are needed through not only the planning process but also the day of to support events. If you are interested in being part of the planning and coordination, please attend the next meeting April 15, 2024 at 6:30PM held at the community center.

Village of Manley Awaits Decision

Madison Garey

The Honorable Michael Smith, district court judge, 2nd judicial district, heard the case of the Schmidt’s v. The Village of Manley, March 13, 2024. Thirty minutes after the scheduled start time, Judge Smith entered the court room.

The Schmidt’s opened, calling witnesses, asking questions and stating their side of the case supporting the six causal actions filed against the village. The actions ranged from improper notification of public meetings, citizens prohibited from having questions answered at public meetings, to the board marketing the property for sale and not adhering to the code of conduct for public meetings.

Representing the village, Attorney David Chebatoris followed. Despite confusion regarding what the Schmidts were suing for, he demonstrated the Village’s side of the case. Board members were not influenced by their personal agenda, were consistently professional in the handling of all actions taken, regardless of mistakes, and acted in a consistently professional manner that supports the Comprehensive Plan and the future of the Village of Manley.

In the end, without professional legal representation, it appeared the Schmidt’s felt a personal vendetta had been created against them. Village representatives held they were doing what was needed to protect the Village of Manley. Citizens are expectantly awaiting the decision from Judge Smith and the end to this lengthly litigation.
