Election years can be tense. Many can get wrapped in concern for where our county is headed. The actions of politicians in previous years can change a voters opinion of whether that person staying in office is the right choice for their county, state, or country. Many citizens look at the state of our nation and are frustrated by the direction which it is heading. The one thing to keep in mind is there is no perfect candidate. It is not possible. Every one running is human. Not one is without fault. In reality, we often are not voting for a person per-say, but the candidates platform: which party more aligns with your beliefs or moral conviction. Either way, make sure you head to your polling location May 14 for the primary elections. What ever turns out, we can have confidence that God is in control!
May is the unofficial start of summer. The weather warms, flowers are blooming and the kids herald the anthem: School’s Out by Alice Cooper. Reflecting on childhood summers makes one wish for the slow paced days filled with swimming, eating popsicles all day and sleeping in. Ah, to be young again. May is simultaneously an ending and new beginning for those graduating. Whether heading directly into the work force, off to community college, or university, I wish the best of luck to all Cass County graduating seniors!

The Man in the High Castle Review
Andrew Garey
The Man in the High Castle (1962) by Philip K. Dick is not a great book despite winning book awards. It has many unique concepts, but it did not have a tight enough storyline to be worth the time.
The book is an alternative history novel that depicts the Axis Powers winning World War II and split up America. The book does not fully explore the potential politics, government backstabbing or spying in this new helllscape. The book instead waste pages describing whether it is honorable to sell counterfeit American antiques and receiving guidance via ancient Chinese divination books. There are some moments of action and tense moments, but they are lost due to the author’s failure ratchet the intensity up. A few characters are interesting but most of them are not sympathetic.
Spoiler warning: a book within this world tells of another alternate history in which the Allies win the war. The main characters learn from the oracle that this book is true. This major revelation goes nowhere as the characters still live in this world and can change it. Like this plot point, the book is aimless and leaves the reader empty.

Town Residents Frustrated Over Delay in Speed Bumps Installation
Taylor Johnson
Since March 2023, the residents of Manley have been tirelessly advocating for the installation of speed bumps on 160th Street, citing concerns over the safety of their children due to speeding vehicles. However, their pleas seem to fall on deaf ears as the town board continues to provide excuses, frustrating the community even more.
The issue came to a head when a child narrowly escaped being hit by a speeding car on 160th Street. In response, when concerned parents inquired about the status of the promised speed bumps, they were met with an astonishing question from the board: “Why was your child playing in the street?”
The board’s actions, or lack thereof, have raised serious doubts about their priorities. While they’ve spent considerable resources—over $15,000—fighting against Schmidt’s special use permit, claiming it contradicts the comprehensive plan, they’ve conveniently ignored provisions within the same plan mandating speed safety units on 160th Street. This glaring inconsistency has fueled suspicions about the board’s motives and whether personal agendas supersede community safety.
With $80,000 invested in street repairs this year alone, the residents believe it should be a straightforward task to prioritize the installation of speed bumps. The safety of their children and the well-being of the community should be paramount concerns for the town board, rather than adhering strictly to certain aspects of the comprehensive plan while disregarding others.
As the debate continues, residents are urging the board to act swiftly and fulfill their responsibility to ensure the safety of all citizens on 160th Street and beyond.

Nebraska Sever Weather
Nebraska has long been in the path of what is known as Tornado Alley. The devastating destruction on April 26, 2024 is evidence of being in that path. The destruction of over 40 homes is a stark reminder of the need to be prepared for emergencies. Ensure you have an emergency kit ready that includes a battery operated radio, water, blankets, food and a charged cell phone. An external fully charged battery is also a great idea.
Know what to do in case of an emergency. In the case of a tornado warning, find the lowest level of your home, preferably a room with no windows. Stay there until the warning has expired. Some suggest putting infants in bucket car seats for an added layer of safety.
By the grace of God, not one soul was lost during the storms producing several EF-3 tornadoes producing 165 MPH winds through Douglas, Washington and Harrison Counties, Nebraska. Though life was not lost, help is needed. If interested in volunteering visit Omaha Rapid Response.
