At times it can feel like our work is drudgery. Often we will retort “same thing, different day.” Some will say the antidote to this type of thinking of one’s profession is “do what you love” as you will “never work again in your life.” If people were to reframe the way they consider their daily tasks, perhaps it would lead to a more optimistic view of their work. Colossians 3:23-24 speaks of doing all work for the Lord. Oftentimes, God’s will for our lives is exactly where we are and in what we are doing. If you have a hungry family to feed, His will for us is to make dinner. If the toilet needs scrubbing, His will for us is to grab and brush and get to work. We get caught up in the “what is God’s will for my life” idea of huge world altering activities, but what needs done is simply the task at hand. In reality, all we have is today. Yesterday has passed and we are not guaranteed a tomorrow.

Hurricane Force Winds and Widespread Power Outages
Madison E. M. Garey
July 31, 2024 brought winds surpassing 100 MPH to the Manley area. Trees were knocked over, limbs were torn down and over 200,000 citizens lost power in eastern Nebraska. The storm moved in quickly. Clouds raced through the skies being urged on by whistling wind from the west. Thankfully, no tornadoes spawned from the severe winds. The Village of Manley lost power just after 6 PM the evening of the storm. Some had power restored by 3 AM August 1, but not all. Many residents were without power for nearly 24 hours on a day with temperatures soaring above 90 degrees. Many OPPD (Omaha Public Power District) electricians were on the scene working on power lines in the heat of the day to restore electricity to our citizens. Thank you OPPD!

Pillage the Village: August 17, 2024
Pillage the Village is rapidly approaching. Many activities are planned to keep visitors busy for hours. The day will begin with the traditional pancake feed hosted by the Manley Volunteer Fire department. It is said they have the best pancakes in the county. The morning also hosts the start of both Pickle ball and Corn hole Tournaments, Craft fair, car show and new this year, a petting zoo hosted by Scatter Joy Acres! See below for the full list of activities and times for the day of pillaging. This event is funded in part by Cass County Tourism.

Most Anti-Democratic Activities

Kris Udd
Crossroads Bible Church, Pastor
So it’s not news to anyone that we are in the midst of what has to be the strangest election cycle of our lifetimes. Among the most bizarre things is the recent appointment of Kamala Harris as the new presidential candidate. It’s bizarre because her party is called the “Democrat” party, which would suggest they are proponents of democracy. Democracy, by definition, is the population electing their government officials. So they ran a primary and elected a man to be the presidential candidate, but then a select group of former leaders and Hollywood actors pushed him out and replaced him with his VP, who never even ran in the primary and never got a single vote. Its one of the most anti-democratic activities one could imagine, coming from a party that labels itself “Democrat.” Now I think I can legitimately tell my grand-kids, “Yep, I’ve seen it all.” Of course, next week hasn’t happened yet, so maybe there’s still more to come.

4-H: Connecting Our History to Our Future
Madison E. M. Garey
Throughout each year, 4-H groups meet to support children to lead impactful lives. Groups focus on agriculture, animal husbandry, shooting sports, crafts, gardening, cooking and even quilting. These skills not only lend the ideals of patience and persistence to our youth, but keep the history of living in the plains alive. While some would run to the store for a new blanket, shirt or a fresh salad: 4-Hers are keeping tradition alive in preserving historic acts of quilting, clothes making, and gardening.
Not only do 4-H activities echo the past, but prepare kids for the future by teaching STEAM topics like energy, electricity, robotics, and rockets. The children who participate in 4-H have a unique opportunity to learn from the past and advance in the future. For all of the work these kids put in through the year the fair is where all can see the fruits of their labor. Head to the Cass County fair to check out all of the static displays submitted by Cass County 4-H kids.

Local Art: Theatrical Reviews
The Wizard of Oz
Ralston Community Theatre

Andrew Garey
Recently the Ralston Community Theatre returned this summer with a production of Wizard of Oz. Based on L. Baum Baum’s 1900 novel, it was later adapted into the 1939 classic movie everyone knows and loves. The stage production of the story was later started in 1987. Dorothy, a young girl from Kansas is transported to the Land of Oz where she meets the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, the Good Witch of the North and the great and powerful Wizard of Oz. The team also contends with the main antagonist, the Wicked Witch of the West.
This was a great stage production. The crew staffed a surprisingly small, but very talented cast. The children playing the Munchkins and other parts were fantastic. There were however some technical difficulties. There were issues with microphones which did not pick up the singers’ voices. The Wizard’s giant face could have been better and more animated.
If anyone sees this stage show, the lesson is that it will never have the high value of a Hollywood movie. The stage production had a great use of practical effects. With that in mind, the Wizard of Oz is a worth-while show.
Beauty and the Beast
Lofte Community Theatre
Amanda Charles
If you have had the good fortune to see a show at the Lofte Community Theatre, you are already aware of the magic made there. Beauty and the Beast is indeed a beast of an undertaking and the Lofte rose to the occasion, as it always does, to create a stunning world for its audience to be enthralled with. Young and old see themselves in these characters and in this tale and this classic story brings people from across the generations together (proven through several sold-out productions). Inspiring smiles and laughter in all ages, inviting the young to love the theatre and the older to joyously reflect on the rewards of change in life… this is truly a tale for the ages.

But a story itself cannot alone carry the weight of producing such results. It takes a team to manifest these worlds and the Lofte has assembled a winning team. From an expertly assembled and brilliantly directed cast and orchestra, to artful and thrilling choreography, mystical lighting and picturesque costuming, props, and scenery… the multitude of working parts that came together to produce this masterpiece was truly, well, a beauty to behold.
If you are sad you missed this one, never fear. The Lofte puts on fabulous works of all kinds throughout the year and experiencing them will not only bring joy to your life but also support your local “born-in-a-barn players” in continuing their production of phenomenal art to enrich the lives of our communities.
Visit the Lofte’s website, Lofte.org, to see what’s coming up next or follow the Lofte Community Theatre Facebook page to be apprised of the wonderful collaborations and productions to come! You can also call them at 402-234-2553 for more information about productions and ticket purchases.

Table Grace, The Musical
Performances are on August 8 and 9 at 7:00 pm, and the Mobile Grace Cafe food truck will be open 1 hour before the show starts.
Table Grace the Musical is loosely based on the mission and impact of Table Grace Ministries through Table Grace Café. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of musicals or are looking for a delightful and uplifting evening out, this production promises to be an unforgettable experience!
In the show, we meet Pearl, a homeless individual whose life is transformed by the Grace she experiences at the café, and she, in turn, offers the same to others. The truck will open 1 hour before the show starts – the menu will be determined at a later date.
Come for the show, stay for the cause! “Nourishing Bodies and Souls through multiple segments of business to holistically help people around us.” Table Grace Ministries may be most well known for their cafe located at 1611 1/2 Farnam St in Omaha.
