Happy Birthday Manley News! We been in publication for a year. What started as a project to help pass the time during my husband’s last deployment has been an educational endeavor. I had no idea of the understanding I would gain when I began this undertaking. I have learned more about the history of Manley than I ever thought I would. I have spoken to residents and learned their histories. Writing this paper each month has forced my to reconsider ideas I held and taught me new things. I really have grown in writing and putting this paper together each month.
Earlier in the year, I read the story The Clocks of Rodaine. It is a tale of a young girl who after hearing how out of sync all of the clocks in her village were made a plan to correct the problem. She set out to get everyone’s clock on the same timeline. The girl went door to door to to correct their timepieces. If they set their clocks to the time on her clock, everyone would be in step. She would then essentially be the keeper to time. Some citizens were offended by her assumption their clocks were off. The clocks had be in the family for many generations, and because it was her family’s legacy, their clock were simply not wrong. Others, in a harsh tone, sent the girl away without even listening to her plan to get the village all in step. When she at last went to the clock maker, she had a thing or two to learn. Not only was her clock off by a few minutes, but it was the nature of clocks to lose or gain minutes. The only way to know the correct hour was to check the sun dial during the equinox and correct her own time.
While this story is about clocks, it brings to mind thoughts of the human condition. My take away was that often, if peoples clocks are out of sync, they do not feel inclined to change them. Whether it be family history, a poor attitude or a general unwillingness to listen, each person wanted only to keep time by their own clock, rather than reset and be in step with anyone else, let alone a young girls. The only way to keep our “clocks” right are to refer to the highest of powers. The absolute keeper of time: God. If we are not constantly checking in with Him, our clocks will be off. Sometimes it is hard to accept that we can, in fact, be occasionally wrong. Especially if we are not living with in God’s commands and plan for our lives.

Around the Village
Hurricane Force Winds and Widespread Power Outages
Madison E. M. Garey
July 31, 2024 brought winds surpassing 100 MPH to the Manley area. Trees were knocked over, limbs were torn down and over 200,000 citizens lost power in eastern Nebraska. The storm moved in quickly. Clouds raced through the skies being urged on by whistling wind from the west. Thankfully, no tornadoes spawned from the severe winds. The Village of Manley lost power just after 6 PM the evening of the storm. Some had power restored by 3 AM August 1, but not all. Many residents were without power for nearly 24 hours on a day with temperatures soaring above 90 degrees. Many OPPD (Omaha Public Power District) electricians were on the scene working hard on power lines in the heat of the day to restore electricity to our citizens. Thank you OPPD!

Pillage the Village: August 17, 2024

The 17th annual Pillage the Village started with the pancake breakfast hosted Manley’s own volunteer fire department. After a filling breakfast, the pickle ball Tournament kicked off at 8 AM with a cornhole tournament, car show and bingo filling the afternoon. Several venders lined Cherry Street selling local creations of toys, jewelry, art and even treats for furry friends. Free activities like a coloring contest, cup cake decorating and creating a fairy garden kept kids busy the majority fo the morning. Thank you to all the volunteers and sponsors who helped to make the Pillage the Village possible.
The 2024 annual Pillage the Village was a success. Thank you to all those who put in hours of volunteer time in planning, preparing and executing this important village event. Manley is also very appreciative of the dozens of sponsors who supported this fun local event.

Unrealized Capitol Gains
Madison E. M. Garey
Proponents of a new Biden taxation policy has come under fire this month through social media outlets. Posts claim people will be required to pay 20%, even up to 44% tax on the unrealized capitol gains on all assets regardless of selling or keeping that asset. There is fear of paying tax on the increase in value of people’s homes, stocks or mutual funds, without having sold said assets. The fear comes from the realization that people would likely not have the cash flow to cover the annual tax. While there is concern for some, most people should not have to worry as it is currently written. For now, the only people effected by this policy are those with a current net worth (income and assets) of over $100,000,000. Even so, should Americans be taxed on money they did not receive?
While this seems to only impact the super wealthy, in American economics, it has been the trend to start with taxing only the super wealthy. At the inauguration of the 1913 the 16th amendment to the Constitution, Americans making over $800 (representing over $250,000 today) would be the only citizens required to pay a flat tax of 3% on income. All other people would not pay tax. Today federal income tax is paid on any income over $13,850. With this number being far below the national poverty level, $15,060 individually annually, income tax reaches most working Americans. The limits of this one hundred million dollar net worth taxation provides the peak of what could be a slippery slope into all of America paying tax on any unrealized capitol gains as writer Robert Wood points out in his Forbes article.
Another concern is a degradation of the market with investors keeping their money instead of investing it as Ken Coleman points out in this podcast from the Ramsey Show. If investors do not put money into the market new jobs cannot be created and will have an even greater negative impact on the economy of the United States. In Ken’s opinion, this is simply bad economic policy. Making generalizations and estimates of the “pound of flesh” that will be taken from American investors, it is pointed out that the money gained from this tax will not even pay the interest on the $35.32 trillion in debt the United States carries.
Politics matter because policy matters. Policy matters because people matter. Taxing American citizens into poverty to “improve” those already impoverished is lunacy.
